NOTE: While I understand that the use of certain terms/pronouns are important to many transgender or gender-nonconforming people, the film was never intended to be a reflection of anyone’s experiences other than the main character, who is fictional. I prefer to let viewers interpret my work in their own way. Maybe Sam is transgender, maybe she is a lesbian who likes to wear more masculine clothing, maybe she’s just a tomboy. The point remains the same: Sam should be who she (or he, as the case may be) wants to be. Even if Sam does identity as a boy in the end, referring to the character as such in the synopsis could potentially be confusing for those who aren’t familiar with the terminology, which isn’t always black and white, even for allies of the LGBT community. We are ALL learning and I hope the film continues to generate awareness and discussion!
